世界名作激情的・辺境ワールド・ミュージック探検レーべルによる映像と音楽とトーク。2002年に発足した米・シアトル発のレコード・レーベル、サブライム・フリークエンシーズ。東南アジア、南アジア、アフリカといった地域への旅を通じて採集した、レコード、テープ、映画、テレビ・ラジオ番組といった貴重音源/映像を、より広く紹介し共有するための活動を展開しているSublime FrequenciesのHISHAM MAYETとROBERT MILLISが辺境音楽の探求とその裏側について座談会的に語ります。必聴必見。

SUBLIME FREQUENCIESから、サハラ/中東/アフリカをメインにしているHISHAM MAYETがディレクションした記録映画。ハイチ、キューバのサンテリアやブラジルのカンドンブレ、ニューオリンズ、屈強だったために中南米に奴隷として渡り、各地にその宗教と音楽の文化を残すベナンのブゥードゥー(ヴォドゥン)。祭事のダンスと圧倒的な複合リズムの音。音と映像のみで驚きの情景を捉える。地球の上で踊る人間の生の鮮烈な躍動に心打たれる。
Vodoun Gods On The Slave Coast explores ceremony, sacred dance and ritual in Benin, the birthplace of Vodoun (Vodoo). Formerly known as Dahomey, Benin was also called the Slave Coast due to its importance in the trans-Atlantic slave trade from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Today, the worship of Vodoun gods remains integral to everyday life in Benin. Shot in January 2011 during the country’s annual Vodoun celebrations, this film offers an impressionistic glimpse of the major ceremonies associated with this ancient religion.
Hisham Mayet
Hisham Mayet is a film maker, photographer, and musical researcher, born in Libya. As co-founder and co-owner of the Sublime Frequencies label (along with Alan Bishop), Mayet has realized multiple documentary films and music recordings over the course of the label’s 16 year existence. http://www.sublimefrequencies.com

SUN CITY GIRLSのALAN BISHOP、OMAR SOULEYMANを発掘したMARK GERGISが所属する謎に包まれたレーベルSUBLIME FREQUENCIESのオリジナル・メンバー。90年代にシアトルの地下シーンで活躍したCLIMAX GOLDEN TWINSを結成しホラー映画やカルト映画のサントラに楽曲を提供。その後SUBLIME FREQUENCIESの映像作家となりタイのピーターコン祭りの様子を収めた『PHI TA KHON: GHOSTS OF ISAN』、南インドの宗教行事、祭りを記録した『THIS WORLD IS UNREAL LIKE A SNAKE IN A ROPE』を発表。ストリートの様子をそのまま真空パックしたような映像は大きな話題を呼んだ。78回転レコード、SP盤のコレクターとしても知られDUST-TO-DIGITALにも楽曲を提供している。 https://robertmillis.net/
Robert Millis is a musician, Fulbright scholar (to India) and sound artist. He has worked extensively with the Sublime Frequencies label and released music under the name Climax Golden Twins. Sun City GirlsのAlan Bishop、映像作家のHisham Mayet、Robert Millis、Mark Gergisなどの仲間達によって2002年に発足したシアトル発のレコード・レーベル、それがSublime Frequencies。彼らは東南アジア、南アジア、アフリカといった地域への旅を通じてコレクションしてきた、現地のレコード、テープ、映画、テレビ・ラジオ番組といったヴィンテージ音源/映像を、より広く紹介し共有するための活動を展開しています。当初は非欧米圏の音楽を、ワールド・ミュージックという既存の視点からではなく、サイケ/オルタナの文脈から発見/紹介していくレーベルでした。誰も見向きもしないような大量のヴィンテージ音源の中から選出したコンピレーション・アルバムを発表したり、現地で偶然出会った音楽家の演奏をフィールド・レコーディングした作品を発表していました。それらの音源が知れ渡るにつれ、現在ではトライバルなクラブ・ミュージックやフリー・フォークの文脈にまでレーベルのファンは拡大されています。 http://www.sublimefrequencies.com
SUBLIME FREQUENCIES is a collective of explorers dedicated to acquiring and exposing obscure sights and sounds from modern and traditional urban and rural frontiers via film and video, field recordings, radio and short wave transmissions, international folk and pop music, sound anomalies, and other forms of human and natural expression not documented sufficiently through all channels of academic research, the modern recording industry, media, or corporate foundations.
SUBLIME FREQUENCIES is focused on an aesthetic of extra-geography and soulful experience inspired by music and culture, world travel, research, and the pioneering recording labels of the past.
